7 macOS From Scratch

This set of wiki articles will create a new macOS VM using Apple supplied media directly from Apple servers. It does not require an ISO image download from a 3rd party site. This is done by first getting the RecoveryOS image from Apple servers and using that to boot the VM and run an Internet Recovery setup of macOS. The process is documented by Apple, "Use macOS Recovery on an Intel-based Mac". Once a working macOS VM has been created other macOS specific tools can be used to create installers for other versions of macOS. Good tools to use are Mist and Mist CLI.

The demo will show the installation of macOS 15 Sequoia from scratch. The same process can be used from Big Sur to Tahoe.

The process is shown in these wiki pages:

  1. Before Installation
  2. Installing macOS
  3. After Installation

The demo was built using VMware Workstation Pro 25H2 with Ubuntu 25.04 on an AMD Ryzen PC, but the steps are the same on other OSes and platforms.
