I have been using this app for many months and for the most part is has done exactly what it is supposed to do. However, after the last update offered on Google Play, the manual backup no longer works. Each time I try to backup, I receive the "Error during backup/restore: IO Error" after the "calculating..." stage.
The odd thing is that the Automatic backup function is still working (the opposite of other issues I have seen reported). I checked my Gmail folder and all messages prior to an automatic backup are there, I just can't backup anything manually now, which is a pain because I have to wait til the automatic backup runs to delete messages, and while it always backs up eventually, it rarely does it when it is actually scheduled to (usually within 6 hours).
The only other time I have received an IO error is when my internet connection disconnected in the middle of a backup. Any time this happened in the past, disconnecting then reconnecting the Wifi on my phone always resolved the issue and SMS Backup + continued where it left off. I have tinkered with the internet connection many times and it's still not working. I'm fairly certain it's not a connection issue. Only the manual backup function is failing.

@loveletter can you send the log files as well ? https://github.com/jberkel/sms-backup-plus/blob/master/README.md#faq-file-bug-report
@loveletter commented on GitHub (Dec 25, 2014):
@jberkel I don't consider myself very tech-savvy, so hopefully I did this correctly. By the way, I couldn't find the log in the SD card, where the bug-reporting instructions said it would be located; it was in my phone's internal storage. Not sure if that's relevant or if my phone is somehow programmed to save things to internal storage by default.
Here is the link to the gist of the log: https://gist.github.com/00cb51fddb56efc3d46d.git
I just enabled the sync log (and extra debug info), so the log only consists of 2 back-to-back attempts to perform a manual backup.

I also encountered the same problem.

@loveletter thanks, somebody else reported a similar bug, it looks like it's related to MMS. can you disable MMS backup and try again to see if it works?
@loveletter commented on GitHub (Dec 27, 2014):
@jberkel I disabled MMS and still got the IO error. I also tried disabling call logs as well as MMS and that didn't work either. Here is the gist https://gist.github.com/d493d7be470f26f4a769.git
I also changed the Automatic backup schedule from every 24 hours to every 6 hours and enabled Incoming backup after 1 hour to try to resolve the problem of not being able to manually backup. I just realized since then I have not received any new backed up messages in Gmail (since Dec. 23). I think I found a relevant portion of the log from yesterday (looks like it was trying to perform "regular" automatic backups and incoming backups but also getting the IO error)...
Log of failed Auto & Incoming backups: https://gist.github.com/f0ab378101f845c3a2c3.git
I previously had Automatic backup set to every 24 hours and no incoming backup. It had been like that ever since the day I first downloaded the app. But it seems that now that I've changed it, nothing is getting backed up either way.
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Dec 28, 2014):
everyone, please try https://github.com/jberkel/sms-backup-plus/releases/tag/1.5.7-BETA1 and let me know if it works or not.
@loveletter commented on GitHub (Dec 28, 2014):
@jberkel Thank you! It seems to be working now.
The only issue I noticed is my phone screen kept locking in the middle of backup, which I don't think used to happen before (?) Not sure, but regardless, that's a very minor inconvenience. The app seems to be functioning now.
Manual backup of SMS, MMS, and call log are all working. I suppose all there is to do now is wait and see if it performs Automatic and Incoming backups successfully. I'll let you know if I have a problem.
