Describe the feature you'd like

Many saved articles are written in languages that are not the user’s native language, which makes reading and understanding them slower and more cognitively demanding.

It would be useful to have an option to view an article side-by-side, where:

  • one pane shows the original text
  • the other pane shows an AI-generated translation into a user-selected target language

The translation should preserve the article’s structure (headings, paragraphs, lists, code blocks if present) and allow the user to easily compare the original and translated content while reading.

Describe the benefits this would bring to existing Karakeep users

  • Lower language barrier: Users can comfortably read and understand content written in foreign languages without leaving Karakeep.
  • Better learning & comprehension: Side-by-side layout allows users to verify meaning against the original text, which is especially useful for technical or educational articles.
  • Improved reading flow: Eliminates the need to copy text into external translators or switch between apps.
  • Higher value of saved content: Articles that would otherwise be skipped due to language friction become fully usable.

Can the goal of this request already be achieved via other means?

Users can currently copy article text and translate it using external tools (browser translators, AI chat tools, or translation services)

Have you searched for an existing open/closed issue?

  • I have searched for existing issues and none cover my fundamental request
