I wanna try this on my main OS to test it on my VM. I just want to ask if this can be used on a vpn?

The only VPN I use it with is OpenVPN can't comment on others.

Yes, it should work with any VPN which supports NAT and redirects the ports from WAN to your internal VPN IP.
