Delete branch "%!s()"
Deleting a branch is permanent. Although the deleted branch may continue to exist for a short time before it actually gets removed, it CANNOT be undone in most cases. Continue?
Originally created by @sergeevabc on GitHub (Nov 5, 2025).
Original GitHub issue: https://github.com/matze/wastebin/issues/188
The note was created around 2025-11-04 16:00 UTC0.
It was set to expire in 1 month.
Yet today I see “Database error: entry not found”.
It seems someone secretly peek at new notes and delete those he doesn't like.
Is that true?
@matze commented on GitHub (Nov 5, 2025):
It should not be true. Did you accidentally tick the "burn after reading" box?
@sergeevabc commented on GitHub (Nov 5, 2025):
No.
A few hours ago (at 2025-11-05 19:06 UTC0 to be precise) I created another note with the same content as before. And again, I set it to expire in 1 month. Your server returned the following address: https://bin.bloerg.net/Am--AB-qw4j.txt It opened without issues from different computers, but right now it does not work. I see the same error.
@matze commented on GitHub (Nov 5, 2025):
Have you seen the big disclaimer regarding the demo paste bin? It clearly says
@sergeevabc commented on GitHub (Nov 6, 2025):
Frontpage https://bin.bloerg.net/ found via https://alternativeto.net/software/wastebin/ says nothing that it's a demo. And there is no warning notice on the top or elsewhere.
From UX perspective, this is a developer oversight. Hence the issue.
Compare this…
…and, for example, the unambiguous caring approach of https://mdbin.deno.dev/
@matze commented on GitHub (Nov 6, 2025):
Thanks for the detailed explanation. However, I won't further discuss this because the reported issue does not exist.
@matze commented on GitHub (Nov 6, 2025):
What is your problem? If alternatives.to frames the demo service wrongly, it is not my problem. Bring it up with them. This is free software without warranty and for self-hosted purposes.
@sergeevabc commented on GitHub (Nov 6, 2025):
It's not about alternativеto.net or a search engine like google.com, where someone can find a link to the pastebin instance https://bin.bloerg.net/, but rather about the fact that its appearance does not provide any indication to the user that it works in demo mode. This means that users may use the website to store their notes, only to find that they are soon lost. Is such a simple and clear idea incomprehensible to you? Or you're too young and stubborn to follow the best practices? Sure it's up to you whether to guide users or not by means of some notice ON the site. But it's also up to me to speak up about bad UX when I stumble upon it, because I don't want the Internet to turn into a dump where poor quality is justified by the fact that something is done for free. You can do better.
@matze commented on GitHub (Nov 6, 2025):
No, but your entitled attitude reduces my willingness to do anything to zero. First of all, the issue you opened isn't an issue because the software works as intended. Second, you ask to me to do things as if I were on your payroll. Third, this is free and open source software. Feel free to open an appropriate issue first, even better open a PR that does something to your liking and we can talk, third to speed up things you might give me incentive. Being condescending and demanding is achieving the opposite.
You see the options, I will lock this discussion because it's leading nowhere.
