I'm not the dev but I've made a stab at resolving this issue. I've tried looking in the source code for those messages, but they don't appear anywhere, so I assume they're in some library that's used by the app.

However "Store URI" would appear to relate to one of the configuration settings, so that leaves me wondering if you've mis-typed something in the configuration?

Or perhaps the configuration option has changed, since XOAuth no longer works with Gmail; have you configured IMAP access to your gmail account yet?

If nothing else works, try clearing app data

  • System Settings → Apps & notifications → SMS Backup+ → Storage → Clear Data

Note: this will forget the record of the most recently backed up SMS which will cause all your SMSes to be backed up as duplicates, unless you also clear your SMS app as well.

What version of the app are you using? Did it get upgraded just before the problem?
Did your OS (version of Android) get updated?
What action did you take immediately before the error?
How long had you been using the app before this started happening?

I'm getting the same error. Backup+ v1.5.11; LG Stylo Plus 2 (MetroPCS); Android 7.0; messaging app is (I think) from LG called "Messaging" v 5.30.64.

This is the initial install and first use of SMS Backup+. I requested SMS/MMS backup for All items, and nothing else.

I did set up IMAP and I think it is correct but I can't really tell because the backup never gets that far; the Error while decoding store URI occurs immediately upon tapping the BACKUP button.

Is it an LG Stylo thing?

@t6t6px7mp3 it is indeed curious that both you and Ginadep have the same model of phone, as I haven't seen reports of this happening with any other model of phone.

You could try Ginadep's approach of installing Firefox and using it to log into your Google account; I've heard anecdotes of several problems that have mysteriously fixed themselves by doing this, but I don't yet know why this works.

Otherwise and unfortunately, Jan and I don't have access to that model of phone to test with, so it may be some time before a proper resolution is available; sorry.

I am having this issue on my Samsung Galaxy S9+ as well.

Last successful backup August 8th.

I finally got around to doing the IMAP, 2-factor, special app password setup, etc. -- and I'm sure I have it correct.

Now when I press the Backup button I immediately get "Error during backup/restore: "Error while decoding store URI."

Log file has more info:
12-12 16:08 General error: Error while decoding store URI (exception: com.fsck.k9.mail.MessagingException: Invalid ImapStore URI)
12-12 16:08 BackupState(currentSyncedItems=0, itemsToSync=0, backupType=MANUAL, exception=com.fsck.k9.mail.MessagingException: Error while decoding store URI, state=ERROR)

I installed the FireFox app and logged into my Gmail with it with my normal 2-factor username and password and token just fine. This did NOT FIX SMS Backup+.

Tried deleting the app-specific password and recreating it and updating the app with the new password -- still no dice.

Any other ideas? I'd like to avoid deleting the app data, but if I have to, I have to...

EDIT: NEVER MIND - I JUST FIGURED THIS OUT. I had a trailing space next to my email address that my keyboard (thanks, Swiftkey!) automatically put in. Once I removed that, I'm back in business! Hope this helps others!!
