You will have to go to advance setting SMS Backup+ then go into customize imap and set the imap.gmail.com:993 and use you email as user ID and your password. Make sure the authinication is set to clear text and security is tls.

After that go to a PC and login to gmail, in the right hand corner click the cog then setting then goto the tab "forward and pop/imap". Under the imap access change it to enable.

Now go to you gmail account settings on the left side click security. Scroll down to less secure settings and turn it on.

Now you should be able to continue to use the app. It is just not as secure.

If you have 2FA enabled for your google account, you'll have to generate an app specific password.

I tried this but can't find "less secure settings " under "gmail account settings". Could you please provide a screenshot to help? I'm on the Google Account page and found "Security" but "LESS SECURE APP ACCESS" is no where to be found on that page.

I am doing it from the PC version. I tried it on my phone and the "LESS SECURE APP ACCESS" option still isn't' there. Underneath Manage third-party access it says "Signing in with Google", then "Password Manager".

"Security" is under Google settings... Not Gmail.

My backup keeps failing once it gets to about 500-700 messages. I have like 34k. I definitely do not want that many dups and it'll take me forever to finish. So I'm gonna just wait until this issue is resolved.

Ok. That's why it wasn't working.
So I turned off the 2-Step, then selected the option for Generated app password and made the App password.
So it appears 2-step verification is not compatible with this app. There's too much hacking going on so I guess I'll have to do without this app until @jberkel can fix the security issues.

I hope it doesn't back-up a bunch of duplicates once it is repaired

@flordagirl it's not necessary to turn off 2FA, and indeed you'd be crazy to do so. Generated app passwords can be used without 2FA even when 2FA is enabled -- that's what they're for.

Make sure you use a separate app password for each app that needs one, so that you can revoke just the one app that gets compromised and not all of them.

I'm having trouble!

So when I go into customize imap, which do I choose? (see image)

Also, do I need to manually type in my email (for user ID) & my email's password (for password).

Also, how do you choose authentication to clear text? I did not see that option.

I do not have 2-step verification set so I don't think I need to create the whole app password process.

After reading this thread #973 the app is now working with workarounds. I'm not clear also in reading the outlook for long term application viability and doesn't appear to be developer support. There's no good alternatives available. I'm reading so much interest keeping it going and hope this can be made to continue and work...

@kurahaupo commented on GitHub (Jul 15, 2020):

@flordagirl Because "Google's requirements" are political, not technical. Jberkel and I have both tried to get around them.

Google's position is essentially that "sensitive scope" access to Gmail will only be granted to programs whose primary purpose is to be an email program, so they see backing up non-email data as out of scope.

It's difficult to make the case that this program fulfills a need for email users when its name includes "SMS" "Backup" and does not include "Email", which is why I have raised renaming the project as a bug report.
