Original GitHub issue: https://github.com/jberkel/sms-backup-plus/issues/855
Every time the app tries to auto backup or manually backup it crashes without error and the log is showing as empty in app. It appears like it is backing up recent messages before crashing but is stuck on some older message as it never completed the intial backup of all history. Thanks
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Mar 20, 2018):
Which version of the app are you using? If it's 1.5.10, please try a new beta from https://github.com/jberkel/sms-backup-plus/releases to see if you can reproduce the crash there
@tysoncecka commented on GitHub (Mar 20, 2018):
I was able successfully backup with the latest beta thanks. It appears to
have other issues though like visually reverting to Idle status even though
it is still backing up when it is switched as the main app.
Thanks for the help! I'm new to Android - will this app now automatically
update or do I need to install it from the play store again?

If you installed the APK manually it won't automatically update.
If you want you can join the beta program by visiting https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.zegoggles.smssync, then you'll automatically get new beta updates.
Can you explain a bit more the issue you experienced, with steps to reproduce? Initiate backup, switch to another app, then switch back?
@tysoncecka commented on GitHub (Mar 20, 2018):
Thanks, yes the issue was that it was backing up and I switched to another
app. When coming back it showed as idle and hitting the backup button
actually caused it to cancel the backup that was actually happening in the
background (the persistent notification actually showed it correctly). I
was also doing YouTube picture in picture at the time and other apps with
screen drawing permissions which could have contributed. Happened
consistently.

Thanks, I created a new issue (#856) and will close this one.
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Mar 23, 2018):
@tysoncecka this should be fixed in beta-15 (rolling out now). Could you please verify? Thanks!
@tysoncecka commented on GitHub (Mar 23, 2018):
Might be doing something wrong but nothing seems to happen when I try to
open beta 15. On latest Android 8.1.0

@tysoncecka sorry, bad update. there's new beta (-16) which doesn't crash
