I have a Motorola Droid Razr Maxx HD, android version 4.4.2. I'm using SMS Backup+ 1.5.5. I've been able to restore sms messages before, but I can no longer restore. It appears that the restored messages show up for a split second and then are deleted/removed. I had already changed my message settings to no longer delete old messages so I do not have a limit on how many message my phone can store. I've tried going through the closed issues looking for a solution but have not been able to find a fix. It's very frustrating that there's no support email or phone number to contact. I'd like to restore my messages.
@duke69111 commented on GitHub (Jun 12, 2014):
I can't help you other than to give an explanation. When google updated the handling of sms, when they created android 4.4 Kit Kat, they added an option to choose a default sms app. In Kit Kat the default message app needs to be temporarily changed to the app that you are using to restore your sms messages from (In this case sms backup plus) and then once the restore is complete, put the sms app back to the default messaging app you use. SMS Backup Plus needs to be updated to factor in these changes before it will work with Kit Kat. Hopefully the developer of this app finds some time to incorporate the changes and update the app. I am assuming that there is a similar reason as to why the call log feature does not work on Kit Kat as well. Its something along the lines of this.
@Quinnavere3 commented on GitHub (Jun 12, 2014):
Thank you... That at least makes sense. At least I know I have those messages and pictures saved somewhere... Even if it's not on my phone.
@duke69111 commented on GitHub (Jun 12, 2014):
It looks like the developer is working on beta testing an updated app that works with Kit Kat. I'm trying it out right now.
@Quinnavere3 commented on GitHub (Jun 12, 2014):
What is kit Kat?

@duke69111 commented on GitHub (Jun 12, 2014):
Ah. Kit Kat is the name for the latest version of the Android software. It is version 4.4. The most recent version of Kit Kat is 4.4.3, however most phones that have been updated are only on 4.4.2.
@Quinnavere3 commented on GitHub (Jun 12, 2014):
Ah...OK. I have version 4.4.2. But I did just update it a couple weeks ago.

I was able to use the beta version of the app to restore both my call logs and my sms messages. If you need to restore your call logs and sms messages urgently, I would try this.
Basically you need to join the beta program through google+ to get the updated version of the app that works with android 4.4. FYI, it does appear to be a work in progress, hence the reason it has not yet been released publicly on the play store, .
Theses are instructions from false9striker.
All kitkat restore issues can be solved by following these steps.
Join Beta testing Google plus group here https://plus.google.com/communities/113290889178902750997
Click on "Become a beta tester" link on the same page.
Update sms-backup-plus from playstore
Do a restore.
Everything should be fine.
@Quinnavere3 commented on GitHub (Jun 12, 2014):
I have tried that. I looked through one of the closed issues to see if I
could find a fix and that was recommended. Unfortunately, it said there was
"nothing to see here" lol. I've attached a snapshot....

That's odd. I just installed the beta version and it restored my call logs and sms messages with no trouble. I'm back in business.
@Quinnavere3 commented on GitHub (Jun 12, 2014):
Wouldn't even let me join the beta testing. :-/

I'm not trying to insinuate anything, but I assume you joined the community first at the top right of the link I posted earlier (https://plus.google.com/communities/113290889178902750997).
Then clicked the blue become a tester here: https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.zegoggles.smssync
@Quinnavere3 commented on GitHub (Jun 12, 2014):
That link came up with the same screen that I sent you...
But before... I followed the link to the Backup SMS+ Google+ page and
clicked on the beta testing at the top

I don't see any attached images on the above comments. Would you post the comment again with the image and I will take a look.
@Quinnavere3 commented on GitHub (Jun 12, 2014):
It's the page I'm taken to when I try to join the beta testing

Here's what I see.
Step 1 - click the Red Join Community button at top. (https://plus.google.com/communities/113290889178902750997)
Step 2 - Press the become a tester button.
Step 3 - Click the become a tester button on the next page:
Step 4 - done
Then you should get the option to update the app in the play store. I had to restart my phone for it to show up by the way.
If these are not the steps you see. You might considered leaving the community and then rejoining.
If you want to try leaving the community:
Click the gear to the right of notification off, then choose leave community.
Thats how I did it and its working for me. Hopefully this helps.
If you don't join the community first, but click the become a tester button, you get the nothing to see here page.
@Quinnavere3 commented on GitHub (Jun 13, 2014):
Thanks! That helped!

Did you get the beta app installed? Is it working for you?
@Quinnavere3 commented on GitHub (Jun 13, 2014):
I did. It restored the messages... Not necessarily in the right order...
But I've got them. I thought it would restore the MMS messages too... But
it didn't. So... It's a start. Thanks for your help!

Got the beta version. All my messages restored! Thanks for the great advice duke69111!
@duke69111 commented on GitHub (Jul 1, 2014):
Glad it was helpful.
@safaustino commented on GitHub (Jul 2, 2014):
Hi. It's been a few days since I tried the beta version and was able to successfully restore my messages. However, this past couple of days i keep getting an error message: "unfortunately, sms backup + has stopped working."
Anybody here who's also experiencing this? How do I fix this?
@duke69111 commented on GitHub (Jul 2, 2014):
I had that a time or two. Did you set your default messaging app back to stock messenger or whatever app you use. On my lg g2 its located under Tethering & Networks, Default Messaging, select your normal app. I did this after restoring and then restarted and I've had no trouble since.
@safaustino commented on GitHub (Jul 3, 2014):
Yes, I didI still get the error message though.
@safaustino commented on GitHub (Jul 12, 2014):
Now, I keep getting this message too: OI error.
What should do?
@safaustino commented on GitHub (Jul 12, 2014):
I mean IO error.
@duke69111 commented on GitHub (Jul 13, 2014):
No idea. You may try clearing the app's cache and data, uninstalling and then reinstalling.
@hvdm57 commented on GitHub (Aug 1, 2014):
Hi
I have got an new LG G3, comming from Samsung SGS4
When I try to restore my SMS everything seems to work fine, but when I open the messing program in LG, the SMS shows up for 1/2 a second and then they dissapere.
Any help
Herman
@duke69111 commented on GitHub (Aug 1, 2014):
I picked up the G3 last weekend and everything restored just fine for me. Are you running the beta version? If so, did you set the default messaging app to SMSbackup+ before you tried to restore?
@hvdm57 commented on GitHub (Aug 1, 2014):
Hi Josh
Thanks for your reply.
No I am not running the beta.
How do I get the beta version.
I have been using the program on my sgs4 for a long time and never faced
any problems.
Thanks
Herman

The app is so great. Dr.Fone is another great desktop app that can recover messages from a wide range of Android devices.
@Clairepitch commented on GitHub (May 10, 2016):
I also tried Dr.Fone but I found it doesn't identify my Galaxy S6, it asked me to root my phone, I gave up!
@hasll commented on GitHub (Oct 9, 2016):
As far me, i use Android rescuer tool to recover deleted messages from android ,it is capable of recovering contacts ,photos,music,video from an android phone or iPhone,it is ideal for everyone,and never damage to device,
