Galaxy S4
All texts are blank and really it's just a long list of ALL of my contacts. Help. I had to replace my damaged phone and need the restore my texts asap.
@false9striker commented on GitHub (Apr 23, 2014):
All kitkat restore issues can be solved by following these steps.
Everything should be fine.
Thanks.

Good afternoon,
I have a Galaxy S4 that was just updated to 4.4.2 and I am having the same issue with sms restoring a list of blank sms threads. I joined the beta testing group, updated the app and attempted another restore, but then receive a force close with a message stating "Unfortunately SMS Backup+ has stopped". Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

@cubansusan Keep trying 3,4 times, it will work. Same thing happened with me also. (Samsung Galaxy S3)
@cubansusan commented on GitHub (May 9, 2014):
Thanks, it did!

Yay I had success restoring my sms messages with sms backup+ on my Nexus N4 running KitKat 4.4.2.
I didn't want to join google plus with the account on my N4, so I followed the build instructions to build my own apk from the git repo.
An easy way to get the build environment going was by following the instructions in the Prerequisites section for the android maven plugin, which I found here:
https://code.google.com/p/maven-android-plugin/wiki/GettingStarted
To install my own build on my Nexus 4 I had to remove the Play store version of sms-backup-plus first (if you do this, note your settings before removing, and after installing your own build, restore the settings).
I found that the restore of my 18,000 messages took around 3 hours.
To prevent the app from crashing (AKA "Unfortunately SMS Backup+ has stopped") during restore I set the following settings on the phone (I am unsure of these are actually necessary, but the git version constantly crashed mid restore until i set all these things):
Reboot phone
Uncheck Display -> Auto-rotate screen
Check Developer options -> Stay awake
(if you don't see the Developer options in settings, a google search can help you turn it on)
Plug in phone to charger
Turn on wifi
Click restore in the sms-backup-plus app
Wait
Thankyou thankyou thankyou jberkel for putting this tool's code on github! A total win!
Also, shame on you google for silent failure of sms restore after an OTA kitkat upgrade! Breaking data restore(!) (from the cloud even!!) in ways which don't offer the user a clear path to problem resolution undermines faith in the android platform as a whole. This makes me sad.

Thanks false9striker for pointing me in the direction of the beta app. It works.
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Nov 21, 2014):
the new beta should not need the stay awake step. not sure about the rotation, i'll check
