I'm running the latest Beta on a brand new Nexus 5 and it appears despite having the right code in place, that it lacks the proper permissions to be used as the default app.
It crashes while trying to bring up the option to change default message app and it is not available if you try to change it in the options.
@skoushan commented on GitHub (Feb 2, 2014):
Same here on my Nexus 5 Android 4.4.2 with SMS Backup+ 1.5.6-BETA. Since it's a Settings crash and not an SMS Backup+ crash, the error report goes to Google, but here's some of the stack trace:
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid fragment for this activity: com.android.settings.applications.AppOpsSummary at android.preference.PreferenceActivity.switchToHeaderInner(PreferenceActivity.java:1180)
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Feb 2, 2014):
AppOps has been removed by google. i'll issue a new beta which can be used to switch the default sms app.
@auXsr commented on GitHub (Feb 6, 2014):
Looking forward to this fix. I always used this app and was very happy, but since I switched to nexus 5 (4.4.2), I was not able to restore them, so had to live without my history for looking things up, thats sad. When will the next beta release be available?
@auXsr commented on GitHub (Feb 23, 2014):
Is the app still being maintined, I just ask, as cannot see much activity here regarding checkins or fixes?
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Feb 23, 2014):
the app is still maintained, however i have very little time to dedicate to it. i understand that the current situation is not ideal - i'll reactivate the previously working version from https://github.com/jberkel/sms-backup-plus/pull/388 and issue a new beta soon.
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Mar 3, 2014):
i uploaded a new beta which reverts to the old behaviour (prompt to change the default sms app).
@auXsr commented on GitHub (Mar 4, 2014):
Hm, my device has not recognized an update within the play store yet...
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Mar 4, 2014):
might take a while, make sure you're signed up for the beta: https://github.com/jberkel/sms-backup-plus#beta

Hi, just want to say, I received the new version and the restore itself seems to work again on my nexus 5 4.4.2, got back all of my 5200 sms.
But the app is very buggy now, I needed several retries.
It just stopped when screen locked or sometimes poped up if i want to switch back to hangouts as default sms app, in the middle of restore process.
