I fixed this locally and put up a pull request which did the trick for me. There's various timing issues and interaction questions, however (you may need to click "restore" twice).

I've just tried the 1.5.6-BETA version and I still don't see any old SMS texts in my Hangout app.

Not sure if having more than one Google account in Hangouts can mess up anything with the new SMS api?
