This used to work. It stopped sometime recently. I regularly accept new versions. Am currently using v 1.5.4 on Droid DNA with Android 4.2. Sync log here: https://gist.github.com/swamp2/5973659 (showing two recent successful manual backup).
@speechmomm commented on GitHub (Jul 11, 2013):
Same problem. Worked well until last few updates. Auto backups occur inconsistently and when i try manual backup, it says there are no items to back up when there are several there. I update regularly and am now using 1.5.4 on galaxy s3. Please help!
@boneflower commented on GitHub (Jul 11, 2013):
same problem as above, was working beautifully until the early june updates :/
@swamp2 commented on GitHub (Jul 11, 2013):
Thanks for the confirmation. I hadn't noticed the issue of no items to back up when there are some there.
Bingo - one more confirmation just now.
@swamp2 commented on GitHub (Jul 11, 2013):
I'd also like to add that we're all quite lucky to have this free app and active development as well!
@speechmomm commented on GitHub (Jul 11, 2013):
Agreed we are fortunate to have this free app. I have donated in the past
and am willing to donate again if this issue is fixed and it gets back to
normal! Thank you!

Another observation...I manually backed up, having about 20 items ready to be backed up, and it calculated and "worked" for a long time, about 60 secs, but only 1 item backed up. Also noted that the automatic backups seem to occur only 1 time per day and it is never thorough. Thought this info might help with a fix.
@mehurley123 commented on GitHub (Jul 12, 2013):
I'm seeing same issues as above since getting most recent update -- 1st, regular backups didn't seem to occur at all; but incoming automatic backups were still working; now it doesn't appear to be backing up at all. Trying a manual backup says there is nothing to back up :(
@FrankInSF commented on GitHub (Jul 12, 2013):
Same here. I just noticed that my last automatic backup happened on July 7. I unchecked 'Auto backup' and rechecked it. Then I did a manual backup and it did 45 SMS and phone log items without a problem. Mine is set to only do a backup every 24 hours via Wi-Fi only. I accept all updates and have v1.5.4 on Sprint Galaxy S3. I just enabled the 'Sync log' and the 'Extra debug information', in case they are needed this week.
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Jul 12, 2013):
can you try the beta and see if it's fixed there?
https://github.com/jberkel/sms-backup-plus#beta-testing
@speechmomm commented on GitHub (Jul 12, 2013):
Th beta 1.5.5 beta version popped up as an update on my daughter's phone, a
stratosphere, and she accepted it. It worked for a while, but now doesn't
auto update. Manual updates work. I don't know how to get the app from the
webisite you suggested to my phone. Sorry, I'm not very technically
proficient. I just know I love this app and would like it to work like it
did before!

Hello, I would enthusiastically do so but unfortunately I am not a Google+
member and do not want to become one. Any other way to access?
Cheers,

I joined the Google+ group and clicked to become a beta tester. 1.5.4 is
still installed. I await 1.5.5.beta to be downloaded and installed
automatically, since I didn't see anywhere to trigger a download myself.

@speechmomm commented on GitHub (Jul 12, 2013):
I signed up to be a beta tester. So I guess I just wait for an update? I really wish it could just be put back to the old way on a regular version. It had no problems for a full year...now this:(
@boneflower commented on GitHub (Jul 13, 2013):
I agree
@speechmomm commented on GitHub (Jul 14, 2013):
Update: installed the beta 1.5.5 onto galaxy s3. No change. Still not backing up SMS and call lugs. Does back up mms though. Interesting note...manual backup still not recognizing anything to backup but I did notice the date is wrong. It is an exact month ahead of actual date. It says last item to be backed uwas on Aug 13 2013! The phone clock is accurate.
@boneflower commented on GitHub (Jul 14, 2013):
any idea when the next version update will be? just wondering, that's all
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Jul 14, 2013):
@swamp2 you can download an apk from https://www.dropbox.com/s/08594ibzzyrkd49/smsbackup-plus-1.5.5-SNAPSHOT-market.apk
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Jul 14, 2013):
@speechmomm can you check the backup dates in advances settings - backup? does it show this date for a specific type (e.g. MMS / SMS)
@speechmomm commented on GitHub (Jul 15, 2013):
Well before I saw this comment, I uninstalled and re installed. Then manually triggered the first backup. It recognized the SMS and backed up fine. But then it didn't auto backup all day. I performed one more manual back up an hour ago, which was successful, now it's auto backing the SMS...at least for now. Everything's dated correctly. Nit sure about call log cuz I have no calls ready to be backed up. So glad it seems to be back to normal!
@FrankInSF commented on GitHub (Jul 15, 2013):
After joining the beta program and the auto-update from 1.5.4 to 1.5.5 beta, I'm not sure my SGS3 started backing up, but then I changed the Regular Schedule from 24 h to 6 h and now it is backing up automatically. Also, the phone has updated itself from 1.5.5 beta to 1.5.5.
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Jul 15, 2013):
@boneflower if there are no other reports i will release an update today
@speechmomm commented on GitHub (Jul 15, 2013):
It stopped auto backing up 6 hours ago
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Jul 15, 2013):
@speechmomm can you set the sync log to debug and post it here?
@speechmomm commented on GitHub (Jul 16, 2013):
Checked the sync log box and the debug box in advanced settings. Don't know how to get the info onto this site. Pardon my technical ignorance. I noticed today, it is still not auto backing up the SMS but will perform a manual upload. It is not uploading call log info at all, which doesn't matter to me. I'm interested in SMS mostly. Just updated the app now so it's no longer on beta version.
@boneflower commented on GitHub (Jul 16, 2013):
same problem as speechmomm... call log not being backed up :/ please fix this problem, jan
@swamp2 commented on GitHub (Jul 16, 2013):
Scheduling is now working with the 1.5.5 beta, but it appears only to be working for SMS. Despite setting for every 2h, my call log was last backed up approximately 12 hours ago. Thanks for the progress Jan.
@csrmarket commented on GitHub (Jul 16, 2013):
Having same issue. Auto back up worked perfectly since I started using the app last September. I'm not sure when it stopped working, but I noticed it 3 days ago. Sometimes it backs up - other times not. Sometimes an incoming message will not back up while outgoing messages do...
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Jul 17, 2013):
@csrmarket @swamp2 in order to debug this i need a sync log with debug enabled
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Jul 17, 2013):
@speechmomm i'll post some instructions soon
@speechmomm commented on GitHub (Jul 17, 2013):
Ok. Auto backup on stratosphere stopped working and is still not working on galaxy s3.
@swamp2 commented on GitHub (Jul 17, 2013):
@jberkel: Scheduling is failing again, or perhaps it is just the notification of the last backup time in the apps home screen is not being properly updated. The full log is here: https://gist.github.com/swamp2/26566af876e6597a4087 and I enabled the extra debug info. My backup just now before posting the log was a manual backup. Cheers.
@speechmomm commented on GitHub (Jul 18, 2013):
Auto backup still not working on samsung galaxy 3 and is inconsistent on stratosphere :(
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Jul 18, 2013):
@speechmomm sorry, really busy at the moment but will look at it soon. if you want i can give you an apk of a previous version which should hopefully be more reliable
@speechmomm commented on GitHub (Jul 18, 2013):
That would be great! Something from before June. That's when it started messing up. Not sure how the logistics work with you "sending" me a version. Would it automatically be downloaded to the 2 phones in question?
@FrankInSF commented on GitHub (Jul 19, 2013):
Backups have stopped again, has not backed up for two days. Attached log has Authentication errors.
App v1.5.5, Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3, Regular schedule: 6h
See log here: https://gist.github.com/FrankInSF/8a859cd357e08e6743c5
After posting this, I restarted the phone. Will see what happens.
@FrankInSF commented on GitHub (Jul 19, 2013):
After I restarted my Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3, SMS Backup+ made one backup on 07-18 18:13, but has tried and failed ever, even though there is data to back up.
See log here https://gist.github.com/FrankInSF/855ce3d4ca31052b0148
@boneflower commented on GitHub (Jul 21, 2013):
is there any way you could make things go back to automatic? sorry for lack of better terms... for some reason call log (income/outgo) and outgoing sms are not getting backed up automatically in gmail, only when an incoming sms is received, that's when everything gets backed up into gmail.
@speechmomm commented on GitHub (Jul 22, 2013):
@jberkel I would gladly accept a previous version that auto backed up reliably. Still not auto backing up at all, no matter what.
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Jul 22, 2013):
@speechmomm you can find version 1.4.8 here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/klwa20t7rmjf5nt/sms-backup-plus-1.4.8.apk
let me if this one works better than the current one.
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Jul 24, 2013):
@boneflower could you post a sync log with debug enabled? it would really help. so if i understand correctly the app only backs up if it is triggered manually or via an incoming SMS.
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Jul 24, 2013):
@FrankInSF just checked your logs, looks like it made a successful backup on 07-19 12:13. or didn't that one work either?
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Jul 24, 2013):
@FrankInSF i uploaded a new beta (1.5.6-BETA) which has some more debug logging. please try again and post your logs.
@speechmomm commented on GitHub (Jul 25, 2013):
@jberkel 1.4.8 worked on samsung stratosphere for a while, then auto backups inconsistent. Haven't been able to download the 1.4.8 on the galaxy s3 as the phone isn't always accessible to me. The galaxy s3 has 1.5.5 version which won't auto back up and now won't even back up manually. It's back to saying there are no messages to back up, with last back up date as a future date in august. Hoping your work with FranklinSF and his galaxy s3 will result in a fix that work on mine as well.
@FrankInSF commented on GitHub (Jul 25, 2013):
I installed the 1.5.6-BETA around 9:45pm PDT 7/24/2013. The app says it last backed things up this afternoon around 2:29 pm and yes, this was successful. It was automatic (set to every 6 hours). I'm set to Wi-Fi only, and I was in Wi-Fi coverage at that time. The phone is in Wi-Fi at home and some other places.
I see in "Show Original" the smsbackup+ time stamp when the sync happened, and therefore how long after the call or SMS the sync happened. So, I don't think the 07-19 12:13 backup worked, as events up to that time were backed up a day or two later.
I did a manual backup around Sun, Jul 21, 2013 11:30 PM that worked. Either that time or some other time I did two manual backups in a row, and one of them said it had an XO failure.
I'll leave the phone alone overnight and send you logs in the morning. As of now, it has not backed up a 6:42pm SMS or calls at 6:43 - 6:49pm today 7/24/2013.
@speechmomm commented on GitHub (Jul 25, 2013):
1.5.6 beta not auto backing up on stratosphere or galaxy s3. 1.5.6 update on LG lucid also not auto updating.
@FrankInSF commented on GitHub (Jul 25, 2013):
No automated backups on 1.5.6-BETA since installing last night. Manual backup now 7/25 9;47am successful. Log file is at
https://gist.github.com/FrankInSF/c61d14d4a86afd5acb22
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Jul 25, 2013):
@FrankInSF looking at the logs, there was an automatic attempt at 22:28 which wasn't successful, but most likely because of network / IO errors. i think what you might be experiencing is that backups which occur every 6 hours are not very reliable because it depends on the network connection being available at precisely that time. i would recommend changing to a shorter backup interval.
going forward i think i should change the app to use android's built-in sync manager which takes network conditions into account. the backups won't be as predictable but should be more reliable.
i pushed out another beta with even more logging and a potential fix - however i'm not very hopeful that this going to change much. whenever you see "backup finished" without showing a prior error it should have uploaded the messages. i'm puzzled as to why this doesn't seem to be the case.
please install the new beta and post a log after a few days - if this doesn't fix you'll have to wait until i release the new version with android sync support.
@speechmomm commented on GitHub (Jul 25, 2013):
@jberkel if you post instructions how to upload logs, I can do it on my stratosphere. I have had the sync log on for a while now. The auto backups work off and on and I set my intervals to 30 mins. The app on all 3 droids on my account started failing when the what's app feature was added.
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Jul 25, 2013):
@speechmomm connect your phone to your computer as usb device. on windows this should be automatic, on osx you'll need an extra application http://www.android.com/filetransfer/
locate the file sms_backup_plus.log (should be in the top level directory) and post it as gist on https://gist.github.com, then include a link to it here.
@speechmomm commented on GitHub (Jul 28, 2013):
@jberkel I wasn't able to transfer the files after several attempts. I see more people are commenting that autobackup isnt working or they are getting the same message "there are no items to back up." I'm still having these same problems. Is it possible for you to push an update out of an older version that was reliable? Even if I install the one you sent me, my phone will automatically update to one that doesn't work. I really miss the app the way it used to be :(
@FrankInSF commented on GitHub (Jul 28, 2013):
1.5.6+ BETA Four failures to make a backup this afternoon while the phone was sitting still at home. Sprint SGS3. Regular schedule set to 1h. Require Wi-Fi unchecked.

FYI, here is my latest log. Sometimes fails, sometimes works, but with the schedule set to 1h as you recommended, it backs up often enough for me. Sprint SGS3. Regular schedule set to 1h. Require Wi-Fi unchecked.

@speechmomm commented on GitHub (Aug 14, 2013):
Still not auto backing up on verizon Samsung Galaxy S3. Out of the blue started working on stratosphere and lucid. What is the problem with the Galaxy phones, although it worked on the galaxy for 2 months before it started to fail when the what's app feature added.
@jenser212 commented on GitHub (Sep 30, 2013):
Auto-Backup doesn't work on Galaxy S2 also. I must do a manual backup every time.
@lammcd commented on GitHub (Oct 1, 2013):
I am new to this thread, but thought I would chime in, I just downloaded SMS Backup+ 1.5.5 v yesterday on my samsung Galaxy S III and it worked great. Tonight I can't get a backup done Manual or Scheduled. :( It looks like it is going to work, then "There were no items to backup"
@jberkel commented on GitHub (Jun 12, 2015):
the only reliable way to fix this is to rewrite big portions of the backup code (using SyncManager), but not happening soon since it works for a large group of users.
