I tried using the ec-probe tool on a Dell XPS 15 9570 but it just gives out empty readings, even if started as admin:

How come so? Is there a way to fix this? Would be nice if you could give a standalone zip btw not to have NBFC to install to get this tool. Also give a hint in the FAQ what it means, if it gives out zeroes and why (not compatible?).

@Mezun Yes, thankfully, since 2 weeks, there is a solution:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/dellfancmd-%E2%80%93-tool-to-enable-manual-custom-control-of-the-laptop-fans.827106/

Also autor of HwInfo included the EC register hack in latest HwInfo beta:

https://www.hwinfo.com/forum/Thread-REQUEST-Write-to-EC-manual-fan-control-on-Dell-XPS-laptops

It just works up to bios 1.6.0 though correctly.

ok damn then maybe i should downgrade my bios because 1.7.0 is shitty since my mainboard switch and updating its not acting right.
Even with undervolting i have the 5 sec fan switch in battery mode
thinking about liquid metaling it

@Mezun the fan issues with 1.7.0 are "normal" and Dell is Dell and ignorant and said "it is working as intended". Read about it here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/akngpy/incompetent_dell_devs_answer_to_bios_170_fan/

In simple words: The Dell morons changed it with 1.7.0 that ANY dGPU activity causes a 9 second fan spin, even a 100ms poll, and the dGPU is accessed randomly all over Windows 10 (mostly a bug in Windows / Ms Hybrid Blah / Optimus).

If you deactivate the dGPU in device manager, the fan spins go away.

@Mezun yes it is... Ive downgraded / upgraded from 1.7 to 1.6 to 1.7 to 1.6 now 10 times or so over the past 2 weeks. I think right now to test staying on 1.7.0 and just activate the dGPU when I need it and then deactivate it again afterwards:

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1097428/geforce-mobile-gpus/on-the-fly-dgpu-driver-on-off-usable-under-windows-/

I have no experiences though so far, how stable this is, to toggle GPU drivers on/off under Windows without reboot. So far it seems to work fine.
