Right now init is not idempotent making it difficult for teams to spread git-ai across their teams.

Engineers have to know to run it, and know if they ran it.
Agents have to leave it to the user to run init

If it were idempotent it'd probably help teams and agent builders drive adoption with minimal downsides.
