Which version of floccus are you using?

5.8.3

How many bookmarks do you have, roughly?

700

Are you using other means to sync bookmarks in parallel to floccus?

No (triple-checked)

Sync method

Google Drive

Which browser are you using? In case you are using the phone App, specify the Android or iOS version and device please.

Firefox on computers (Windows and Linux), Android app v5.8.1

Which version of Nextcloud Bookmarks are you using? (if relevant)

No response

Which version of Nextcloud? (if relevant)

No response

What kind of WebDAV server are you using? (if relevant)

No response

Describe the Bug

Before we begin: I can assure you I am using the same bookmarks.xbel in all devices. I tried with and without encription (password), same results.

Floccus was saying that all syncs were successful, but changes from one computer were not being reflected on the other devices. I tried to delete bookmarks on all computers except one, but sync was still incomplete (only some, not all, bookmarks synched) despite floccus telling me that it was a success and everything was alright. I tried to delete the bookmarks.xbel from GoogleDrive and resync from the computer that had the most complete set of bookmarks, no success: only part, not all, of the bookmarks were synched to the other devices.

So I tried to delete the profiles AND bookmarks on all devices and start from scratch. Only one device is left with bookmarks. Now the sync "works" in the uploading machine but fails in all others that are downloading the new set of bookmarks, and I'm getting this error message:

E049: Failsafe: The current sync run would increase your local links count in this profile by 16389%. Refusing to execute. Disable this failsafe in the profile settings if you want to proceed anyway. | Last synchronized: 0 seconds ago.

If I disable the failsafe, it still syncs partially, even with fresh profiles.

Expected Behavior

All bookmarks on all browsers on all devices to be the same.

To Reproduce

There are no steps. Just configure the profiles on all devices and wait. Sync will not work.

Hello! 👋

Thank you for taking the time to open this issue with floccus. I know it's frustrating when software causes problems. You have made the right choice to come here and open an issue to make sure your problem gets looked at and if possible solved. Let me give you a short introduction on what to expect from this issue tracker to avoid misunderstandings. I'm Marcel. I created floccus a few years ago, and have been maintaining it since. I currently work for Nextcloud which leaves me with less time for side projects like this one than I used to have. I still try to answer all issues and if possible fix all bugs here, but it sometimes takes a while until I get to it. Until then, please be patient. It helps when you stick around to answer follow up questions I may have, as very few bugs can be fixed directly from the first bug report, without any interaction. If information is missing in your bug report and the issue cannot be solved without it, I will have to close the issue after a while. Note also that GitHub in general is a place where people meet to make software better together. Nobody here is under any obligation to help you, solve your problems or deliver on any expectations or demands you may have, but if enough people come together we can collaborate to make this software better. For everyone. Thus, if you can, you could also have a look at other issues to see whether you can help other people with your knowledge and experience. If you have coding experience it would also be awesome if you could step up to dive into the code and try to fix the odd bug yourself. Everyone will be thankful for extra helping hands! If you cannot lend a helping hand, to continue the development and maintenance of this project in a sustainable way, I ask that you donate to the project when opening an issue (or at least once your issue is solved), if you're not a donor already. You can find donation options at https://floccus.org/donate/. Thank you!

One last word: If you feel, at any point, like you need to vent, this is not the place for it; you can go to the Nextcloud forum, to twitter or somewhere else. But this is a technical issue tracker, so please make sure to focus on the tech and keep your opinions to yourself.

Thank you for reading through this primer. I look forward to working with you on this issue! Cheers! 💙

Hi @estomagado
Thank you for taking the time to give feedback by opening this issue! I will try to help troubleshoot as best I can :)

only some, not all, bookmarks synched

Can you observe any regularity there? Any specific bookmarks that are consistently missing? Are you missing entire folders or only some bookmarks here and there? Do you have multiple profiles set up per browser?

Now the sync "works" in the uploading machine but fails in all others that are downloading the new set of bookmarks

So, this means, all bookmarks arrive in the bookmarks.xbel file on Google Drive, but when down-syncing in other browsers you are missing bookmarks?

Did floccus used to work for you in the past and only now you're seeing this issue? Or are you a new user and this has never worked for you?

Can you provide a (possibly redacted) log file of such a partial-only down-sync?

Sorry for taking too long to check in here.

Answers:

  1. No regularity. It syncs different bookmarks in different attempts. Sometimes it syncs all folders but not all bookmarks. Sometimes it does not sync all folders.

  2. I have only one profile per browser.

  3. Yes, I think all bookmarks arrive at bookmarks.xbel in Google Drive, but they don't download completely from there. I did not check the contents of bookmarks.xbel, though, I just trusted the uploading Floccus client when it said that sync was complete.

  4. No, not a new user. I have used Floccus for some time now, and it was always flawless. It started after a long period (months? Years? I don't remember) of stability. The irony is that I switched to Floccus because XBookmarkSync was having sync problems...

  5. I can't provide a log file because I uninstalled everything and started anew from a clean install. I've manually backed up my most complete bookmark collection and then cleared all my browsers caches and registry. Then, uninstalled everything (browsers et al), reinstalled everything (including the Floccus add-on), created new profiles and set up the xbel file with another name (bookmarks-new.xbel). Now everything works and syncs.

If I run into this problem again (I think I will), I'll come back here.

Huh. 🤔

I did not check the contents of bookmarks.xbel, though

Would be good if you could check the contents.

It started after a long period (months? Years? I don't remember) of stability.

I'm sorry this is happening to you. I understand that it's frustrating when software has bugs. I will try to
get to the bottom of this with your help if it happens again, if you're amenable to that. The good thing is that we can remove this bug for everyone else who might be experiencing it, if it should not be resolved by now.
