chmod 666 /dev/ptmx

fixes the issue. However this is not ideal. I will need to find out if there is anything else that can be done

A fresh install of CentOS 7 on Virtual box returned this.

crw-rw-rw- 1 root tyy 5, 2 Sep 29 16:18 /dev/ptmx

However a fresh install of my VPS returned this.

crw------- 1 root root 5, 2 Sep 29 16:18 /dev/ptmx

I think I will add this issue to the FAQ's

What does

ls -al /dev/ptmx

return for you?

Hello, are there any further developments on this? I'm stuck with the same error on CentOS 7, but my Garry's Mod server (using the script) works fine.
I'm trying to run a TF2 server but it's throwing this error. Even with ptmx 666'ed.

ls -al /dev/ptmx returns:
crw-rw-rw- 1 root tty 5, 2 Oct 12 13:55 /dev/ptmx

I'm afraid there are no developments on this issue currently. Its only effecting CentOS 7 and is a right pain in the arse. I will keep investigating however there is a lack of info out there about this issue currently.

This has fixed it for me:
https://gist.github.com/timruffles/5037956

Don't worry about setting tty perms on root. Just update 'tf2server' with them.

usermod -G tty tf2server for example.

I haven't heard any issues on this for a little while. Might be fixed by the distro now? Closing for now

I have experienced this issue again

as @RyanMonkey advised his command example worked for me. I will look in to trying to find a way for the script to resolve this issue.
